Case Study 06 - SAIT Digital Signage

Business Challenge
SAIT Polytechnic is always looking for better ways to communicate to their stakeholders. They have 13,000 full and part time students and over 2000 staff & faculty. In 2006 they began to explore how digital signage could enhance the “SAIT Polytechnic Experience”. In the fall of 2006 SAIT Polytechnic under the leadership of Dan Allen, Director, Corporate Communications, embarked on a fact finding mission to help define their digital signage system strategic priorities, goals and objectives.

The system needed to support achievement of the following strategic priorities:
•         Learner and Employee Satisfaction
•         Curriculum Excellence
•         Employee Engagement
•         Institutional Positioning
•         Technology Adoption
•         Health, Safety and Security

It needed to achieve the following project goals:
•         Sense of ‘SAIT community’
•         Perceptions of SAIT as a high-tech, dynamic environment
•         Awareness of SAIT educational opportunities
•         Awareness of scope of activities contributing to entire SAIT experience
•         Response capacity of SAIT in an emergency
•         Profile of work of SAIT students
•         Celebration of student and institutional successes

And it needed to achieve the following project objectives:
•         Accommodating future scalability & complimentary technology
•         Minimizing ongoing capital and operational investment
•         Minimizing the impact on department resources
•         Consideration of best practices
•         Contributing to SAIT Polytechnic’s curriculum

The solution now known as SAITVIEW had to minimize technical support and be flexible and expandable to provide for future evolutions in technology. In addition the system needed to contribute to curriculum, allow for a wide variety of content contributors and enhance emergency response capacity. The chosen solution would be rolled out to twenty signs within their network and allow for future growth as required.
