Fresh Look Fridays -- Story Stage - (21-01-2011)

Happy Friday everyone!

Yes, I've been slacking a bit on the blog side of things (or as one of my wise coworkers put it "woefully neglectful" lol), but I really do have a good excuse! For those who don't follow me on Twitter, or ignore my tweets when they pop up in their stream, my husband and I are expecting our first child this summer! YAY!! Between typical morning sickness and preggo brain, I haven't exactly been paying as much attention to my online life as I have been to how many hours I can squeeze in for napping in a day :)

But enough of the excuses, on to today's Fresh Look Fridays post! Those that are familiar with my blog, know that traditionally I showcase an interactive website that could be utilized for a small group collaboration or full class review.  Today, however, I'm deviating a bit and showcasing a new-ish application for the SMART Table called Story Stage.  I was reminded of this application while working with a group of teachers today at the SMART Table and thought it was worth revisiting in the online world.

To see a quick demo on YouTube of how this application works, click the picture below:

What I really love about this activity is how it fosters creativity and encourages students to CREATE rather than REGURGITATE.  As always, this activity is geared towards the Pre-K - Grade 3 crowd.  The possible extension activities are endless -- especially when teachers and students work together piggybacking off of the children's imagination!

Have a fantastic weekend :)

Vanessa

Proof that I'm reading your blog! :-) I'm happy to hear about the baby and know how draining it can be to prepare for a little one (at least from the Daddy side).

Very cool application. Sometimes I wish I taught the younger kids so I could play with all of these fun tools.

Take it easy and catch up with you later.

Another great educational game I found that kids love that encourages reading and creativity is ItzaBitza. It works on an innovative drawing recognition technology called "Living Ink". My (recentently turned 3) daughter has been playing this for a few months on a touch screen computer (HP TouchSmart 600) and is sometimes difficult to tear her away from it. I think this would also be a real gem to try on a SMART Table. It is available for PC and Mac. Also try the sequel ItzaZoo - currently only available for the PC. Other mentionable: also check Microsoft Blackboard included with the Windows 7 Microsoft Touch Pack (for free) - very similar to Crayon Physics.

A classroom educator for 10 years, I’m now thrilled to be working full time training teachers and helping them integrate technology into their classrooms.

Originally from Calgary, I’m thrilled to be living and working in British Columbia and starting to get to know the fabulous educators in my new province.

I fully confess that I am a tech-geek, and thus always brought technology into the classroom with my students. As soon as I got my hands on my first SMART product – I was a convert – and never taught without one again! I was fortunate to be part of several technical trials with SMART – including the SMART Table, which I enjoyed using primarily with my Grade One students.

I spent some time as an Education Technology Consultant and developed my passion for bringing technology into the hands of kids & helping teachers to maximize the tech tools within their schools.

I also love sports, movies and am a classically trained singer.
